Money and Banks

Opening a bank account in Japan need not be a stressful or time consuming procedure, just knowing what options are available to you and how to apply is sufficient.

Shinsei Bank

This is a relatively new option for foreigners residing in Japan but offers possibly the best account with superb flexibility.  The application process is simple and detailed instructions in English are a real bonus.  You can keep your funds in various different currencies, send and recieve transfers without a fuss and the English call centre is very helpful.  The internet banking facilities that are included with you account are excellent and again, absolutely everything is in English.  Simply 'Request a starter kit' on the homepage and once you recieve, its  a simple task or filling in an application form, choosing your card colour, providing some ID proof and you're done. The nagoya branch is located in between Sakae and Fushimi, so if you would prefer to go into directly to apply, you can.

Post Office Account

A Japanese Post-Office account is a good option available to foreigners in Japan as the process is very "English-friendly", as are the ATMs which are extremely easy to use.  Opening an account couldn't be easier as you only need to take your Alien registration card, Passport, and small amount of money to open your account.  If you have proof of where you live, this can make the process easier, especially when you have to write your address on the application form. You can go to any post office close by and can be finished within half an hour.  You also dont need to worry about having an Inkan (Japanese stamp) as the post-office will just accept your signiture.  After application, they will send you your card and bank book and your account is immediately activated.
