August 22nd 2008 - Junior High School English Contest
The yearly Nagoya English contest was held in the basement of the Naka-kuakusho (Naka-ku area office), next to the Chunichi Building in Sakae. The contest featured over 100 Junior High schools in Nagoya competing in two pools, the morning and the afternoon. In the morning and afternoon sessions, there were 2 groups - those doing a personal speech and those in a pair performing a skit / conversation. Winners were chosen purely on their performance that day with individual speakers competing only with other individual speakers, and not with the pairs.
It was an inspirational display of public speaking by the students who who are all 3rd grade Junior High School students. The speechs and conversations covered a range of topics but largely focused on the environment, earthquakes, peace and love.
In the Afternoon session from 19 individual speakers, 6 were chosen for 'grand prize' awards and only 5 from 26 pairs awarded. The competition was tough and the judges, who looked for fluency, pronounciation, volume, expression and confidence, were strict in choosing the few winners.
